We start with
asking questions, about where you are
now, and where you want to be. Questioning is the
basic tool of coaching. It may be a little shocking
to realize that while coaches may have suggestions,
responses, ideas, and insights, and, like coaches
in sports may give you homework and tasks, they do
not have, or offer, answers. The answers to how you
can find and live your best vision of life, are available
only through you. Your coach asks penetrating, thoughtful
questions that allow the answers to become clear.
It may be that the problems as first stated are not
the true problems; on-going questioning clarifies
your real situation and speeds your progress towards
your envisioned life.
When
you speak, we listen. You need to be
heard deeply and respectfully. And, the coach may
hear that you block your progress by tending to over-generalize,
magnify negative factors, or allow your feelings to
lead your thinking. The basic idea is that the synergistic
relationship between you and your coach, based on
careful listening to your answers to probing questions,
allows your blocks and their solutions to come into
the light of day. The coach does not give you the
answers, your intelligence develops them.
Then,
we respond to you and discuss
with you. In this on-going process, your coach is
a "disinterested" outside party who travels with you
towards the best possible vision of your life. Talking
together about what you've said in a coaching session
leads naturally to more questions, further clarification,
and an understanding that you have already made progress.
